The story behind the season

Where did Santa Claus come from?

The Quick Answer

Santa Claus grew from St. Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop, mixed with Dutch Sinterklaas and shaped by American writers and artists in the 1800s.

The Story

Nicholas was a bishop in Myra (in today's Turkey) known for generosity. Dutch settlers in New York brought Sinterklaas customs. Writers like Washington Irving and Clement Clarke Moore reimagined him, and cartoonist Thomas Nast drew him as a jolly man in a fur suit living at the North Pole. Advertising in the 1900s, including Coca-Cola's 1930s artwork, made the red-suited image famous worldwide.

Legend vs. History

Coca-Cola did not invent Santa's red suit β€” red Santas appeared earlier β€” but its ads helped standardize the look.

Tell the Kids

β€œSanta's story started with a real, kind man named Nicholas who loved helping children. Over many years, people added the sleigh, reindeer and the North Pole.”
