The Quick Answer
The chimney entrance comes largely from the 1823 poem 'A Visit from St. Nicholas,' building on older folklore about magical visitors coming through the hearth.
The Story
The fireplace was the heart of the home in winter, and many European folk tales had spirits or gift-bringers arriving through it. Washington Irving described St. Nicholas riding over rooftops in 1809, and the 1823 poem had him come 'down the chimney with a bound.' The image stuck.
Legend vs. History
How Santa fits down a chimney is pure magic β and every family is free to have its own explanation (a magic key works too!).
Tell the Kids
βThe fireplace was the coziest place in old houses, so storytellers imagined Santa arriving there.β
