The Quick Answer
Witches became Halloween symbols through European folklore about witches and night spirits, then through popular 1800s–1900s cards and decorations.
The Story
Fears of witchcraft were common in early modern Europe and colonial America, leading to tragic trials. Over time, the witch became a folklore character. Victorian and early 20th-century postcards popularized the cartoon witch with a pointed hat, broom and cauldron.
Legend vs. History
There's no reliable evidence that ancient Samhain involved witches as we picture them today.
