The Quick Answer
In medieval and early modern Europe, black cats were sometimes linked to witches in folklore, which made them a Halloween symbol.
The Story
Superstitions said witches had animal companions or could turn into cats. Black cats, hard to see at night, became especially tied to these stories. Not everywhere agrees, though: in Scotland and Japan, black cats are often considered good luck.
Legend vs. History
Black cats are not actually unlucky — and shelters often encourage adoption, as black cats can be overlooked.
Tell the Kids
“People used to believe silly superstitions about black cats. Really, they're just cats who love naps and cuddles!”
